Abstract

Background and Objectives: Low-power wireless sensor network (WSN) receivers require LNAs with adequate gain, low noise figure, acceptable linearity, and reliable input matching under a strict power budget. This work aims to present a new sub-mW 2.4-GHz CMOS LNA architecture for WSN receiver front ends.
Methods: The proposed 180-nm CMOS LNA employs a single-stage CG/CS architecture that combines current-reuse, noise-cancelling, and gm-boosting techniques. The gm-boosted CG path provides low-power input matching, while the CS path suppresses noise and enhances gain. This complementary PMOS-NMOS current-reuse structure improves transconductance efficiency and achieves an optimized power-performance tradeoff without multi-stage overhead.
Results: Post-layout simulation results at 2.4 GHz show that the proposed LNA achieves a power gain (S21) of 11.9 dB, a noise figure of 3.7 dB, and an input third-order intercept point of -4 dBm. The circuit consumes only 0.99 mW at a supply voltage of 1.8 V, with an occupied active area of 0.394 mm2. The input return loss is better than -11 dB, confirming acceptable impedance matching at the operating frequency.
Conclusion: The proposed LNA demonstrates that the presented current-reuse noise-cancelling architecture can achieve sub-mW operation while maintaining suitable RF performance for 2.4-GHz WSN applications. By embedding noise cancellation and transconductance enhancement into a compact common-gate/common-source topology, the circuit provides an effective solution for low-power CMOS receiver front ends and demonstrates an effective tradeoff among gain, noise performance, input matching, linearity, and power dissipation.
